October 2007

Briggs & Veselka Co. formed a cycling team to ride in the Valero MS 150 "Bike to the Beach" which was held on October 20 and 21. The two-day adventure started in San Antonio and finished in Corpus Christi. Day 1 included a 95-mile route to Beeville and Day 2 finished the course with a 60-mile ride to Corpus Christi. Despite malfunctioning bikes, injured bikers and brutal winds, the majority of the team rode more than 100 miles throughout the weekend. The team raised over $5,000 to help people living with multiple sclerosis.

September 2007

Briggs & Veselka Co. recently became the Insights Accounting Partner of Smart Business Magazine in Houston. Briggs & Veselka Co. will be featured monthly with a two-page editorial on a specific accounting-related topic. The September topic is “The Importance of Auditor Selection for an Employee Benefit Plan.”

Houston Business Journal’s “Best Places to Work”
June 15 - Briggs & Veselka Co. was named one of the “Best Places to Work” in the 2007 Houston Business Journal program.  The annual program, now in its seventh year, drew more than 180 nominations from companies that were impartially evaluated, scored and ranked.

Briggs & Veselka Co. was one of 52 Houston-area-based companies selected in four categories, placing 12th in the “Companies 101-500” employees group. To become a Best Place to Work, companies had to complete an employee engagement survey. The survey is based on a six-point scale, and each company is ranked on the average of the aggregate scores. 

Companies were recognized in three categories, based on the number of employees, for companies headquartered in Houston: 10-100 employees, 101-500 employees and 501+ employees.

“The employees at Briggs & Veselka Co. are what make the company extraordinary,” said Johnny Veselka, CPA, President and Managing Partner of Briggs & Veselka Co.  “On behalf of management, I want to say that we believe we have the finest group of employees any company could hope for, and we strive to do everything possible to maintain a pleasing work environment for everyone.”

Forbes.com "The Way the Tax Code Crumbles”
Forbes.com published an article about the Pepperidge Farm cookie family, whose case Briggs & Veselka Co. helped to reach the U.S. Supreme Court in June. The result of this case will directly affect whether a family trust can claim a full deduction for investment advisory, legal, accounting, property management and other such costs incurred in connection with a trust administration. BKR awards Briggs & Veselka Co. one of two 2007 Outstanding Firm Management Awards
Briggs & Veselka Co. was awarded one of two 2007 Outstanding Firm Management Awards at the BKR Annual Americas Regional Conference.  During this conference, about 60 BKR Americas members submit firm information for review. This information includes statistics on realization, profitability and utilization, as well as financial statements.  A committee then compares the information submitted and chooses the best performing firm(s).  Johnny Veselka, President and Managing Shareholder of Briggs & Veselka Co., attended conference and accepted the award.

December 2006

Pirsch & Mills LLP Merger
Dec. 31Pirsch & Mills LLP, founded in Houston in 1994 by Robert Mills and the late John Pirsch, merges with Briggs & Veselka Co.  Robert Mills and Daniel Schomer, current partners, along with three associates joined the Briggs & Veselka Co. staff.

"A decision like this takes a lot of consideration. But we quickly saw that Briggs & Veselka Co. fosters a culture that is unique in the CPA industry and we are excited about this new partnership," said Mills.

Along with Briggs & Veselka Co.’s rapid growth, the merger resulted in an expansion of its office space. The firm already occupied 20,000 square feet on the 7th floor of 6575 West Loop South, but recently made room for growth on the sixth floor, adding about 7,000 more square feet of work space.  

Briggs & Veselka's previous acquisitions included Howard Startsman & Co. in 2001 and a merger with Cantrell & Co. in 2000.

August 2007

October 2007 is MS 150 Bike to the Beach
Briggs & Veselka Co.’s cycling team of more than 12 people will be participating in the Valero MS 150 Bike to the Beach from San Antonio to Corpus Christi, Oct. 20-21. The ride is about 155 miles, and each rider will raise $300 to support the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and people living with MS. Valero set a goal to raise $1.75 million to fight the effects of multiple sclerosis. Briggs & Veselka Co. is proud to be a part in the fight for a cure.

Braeburn Elementary School Supply Drive
Briggs & Veselka Co. is involved with various contributions in support of Braeburn Elementary. Along with other charitable projects, Briggs & Veselka Co. recently participated in the Braeburn Elementary School Supply Drive. Sandy Hrncir, Gail Rideaux, Glaiza Micu and Dan St. Clair of Briggs & Veselka Co. presented Santos Reyes, Principal; Arlene Brenner, Assistant Principal; and Diana Burciaga, Committee Affairs Coordinator of Braeburn Elementary a check for $2,000, which was contributed  by employees as well as the firm. Braeburn Elementary and its staff are very grateful for the support from Briggs & Veselka Co. and its employees.

It’s My Heart Walk
Briggs & Veselka Co. was a sponsor of the 1st Annual “It’s My Heart” Walk, held during Congenital Heart Awareness Month. It’s My Heart Inc. is a Houston-based non-profit organization that advocates for and supports those affected by congenital heart defects. It’s My Heart hosts events throughout the community, such as free days at area museums and water parks, Mom’s Night Out, and monthly meetings featuring special speakers relevant to living with a congenital heart defect.

Boys and Girls Harbor
Our yearly Holiday Charitable Project for the Boys and Girls Harbor was a huge success. Items that were donated to children and families in crisis included televisions, computers, DVDs, bed sheets, towels, kitchen supplies and much more.

"You and your firm's support will make a difference in our kids’ lives,” said Bill Jeter, of Boys and Girls Harbor. “It is so gratifying to see that when kids who have been victims of abuse and neglect find themselves in a safe, secure and loving environment, they can begin to build a future for themselves on a foundation of self reliance.
